Compiled and edited in 1940 by the Reverend Father Earle Hewett Maddux, A Manual for Priests has for generations been an essential reference in the Anglican clergyman's library. It contains numerous useful offices and blessings which conform to, but are not contained in, the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the Anglican Missal. Regarding the importance and usefulness of these offices Father Maddux writes:

"For the great needs and the great moments of life there are the seven Sacraments. But the lesser moments, the activities of daily life, these too are to be hallowed. Certain of the offices and blessings contained in this book are rightly concerned with the things of everyday life. True, the blessing of growing crops will not take the place of a proper tilling of the soil; nor is the blessing of a sick child intended as a substitute for the services of a good physician! Yet both blessings are fitting recognitions of the sovereign power of God; and every priest who has faithfully and devoutly used such blessings in the course of his daily ministry knows from personal observation and experience that they are channels of God's grace and power."
